Our Style

In the world there are many, many martial arts styles, certainly hundreds and probably too many to count.  At some point, every culture on Earth developed a method of unarmed or crudely armed combat, but the best known are the Oriental martial arts, especially from Japan, Korea, and China.

The martial arts at the OLV Club are predominantly based on Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial art developed in the 1940s and 1950s and itself based on Japanese Shotokan Karate and some styles of Chinese Kung Fu.  Like all Korean martial arts, Tang Soo Do has high and powerful kicks, but it also retains the lower kicks and strong hand techniques of karate.

In addition to his training in Tang Soo Do, Mr. Harrison has been fortunate enough to train with Master John Dughi (6th dan Tang Soo Do, 1st dan Judo) and Sensei Thomas Salander (4th dan Jujitsu), so elements of Judo and Jujitsu will be worked into the curriculum for more advanced students.
